Choosing where to stay in Paris is no easy feat. The city is divided by the Seine into two distinct personalities: the Left Bank and the Right Bank. One is more laid-back, with intellectual charm and hidden nooks, while the other is lively and filled with iconic landmarks. Do you want a quieter escape or to dive into the bustling heartbeat of the city? Let’s break it down so you can pick the perfect side for your next trip.

Paris: A Cinnamon Swirl of Districts

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (districts) that spiral out from the center like a perfect cinnamon swirl. The 1st Arrondissement at the core is home to the Louvre and some of the city’s most famous attractions. As you move outward, each layer reveals a different side of Paris—artistic, historical, chic, bohemian, or residential.

And right in the middle of this swirl is the Seine, splitting the city into two sides with entirely different vibes: the Left Bank (Rive Gauche) and the Right Bank (Rive Droite).

The Left Bank: For Dreamers and Philosophers

Unveiling the Two Faces of the City of Light

The Left Bank feels like Paris in slow motion. This is where you’ll find quiet cafés with handwritten menus, bookshops that smell like nostalgia, and winding streets that make you forget time altogether.

Exploring the Left Bank

Start in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where you can sip a café crème at the iconic Les Deux Magots and imagine Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir debating philosophy at the next table. Wander past the elegant Église Saint-Sulpice and into the Jardin du Luxembourg, where Parisian families and lovers on lunch breaks seem to have mastered the art of doing nothing beautifully.

If you’re craving a little student energy, head to the Latin Quarter, home to the Sorbonne and the stunning Pantheon. Its lively streets are lined with bookstores and quirky cafés, perfect for an afternoon of exploring. And of course, there’s the Eiffel Tower, the crown jewel of the 7th Arrondissement, standing tall as the ultimate Paris photo-op.

Where to Stay on the Left Bank

• Hôtel Lutetia: If luxury were an art form, Lutetia would be its masterpiece. The blend of Art Deco and Art Nouveau styling, spacious rooms, and a spa you’ll never want to leave make it a top pick for anyone looking to splurge. I stayed here for two nights and leaving felt like saying goodbye to a new best friend.

• Hôtel Montalembert: This boutique charmer is smaller and more intimate, with rooms that feel quintessentially Parisian. Perfect for couples who want to cozy up in a space that whispers romance rather than shouts it.

The Right Bank: For Glamour and Hustle

Dive into the Vibrant Pulse of Rive Droite

The Right Bank is where Paris puts on its glittering dress and heels. It’s busier, livelier, and unapologetically grand. If you love the energy of a bustling city, this side is for you.

Exploring the Right Bank

Begin in The Marais, where cobblestone streets lead to trendy boutiques and some of the best falafel in the city. The Place des Vosges, one of Paris’s oldest squares, is a quiet retreat surrounded by history and elegance.

A quick hop to the 1st Arrondissement brings you to the Louvre, where the Mona Lisa waits patiently for her next admirer. Just steps away, the Palais Royal Gardens offer a peaceful spot to escape the crowds.

And of course, there’s the show-stopping Champs-Élysées in the 8th Arrondissement, with its luxury shops, cafés, and the dramatic Arc de Triomphe at the end. It’s touristy, sure, but sometimes you just have to embrace the cliché.
