Is Tulum the right choice for your next getaway? Let's find out!
Your Tulum Guide: What to Know Before You Go
Tulum, a gem on the Riviera Maya, has become one of the trendiest travel destinations in recent years. With its stunning beaches, rich history, and vibrant culture, it's no wonder travelers from all over the world are flocking to this Mexican paradise. If you're considering a trip to Tulum but don't know much about it, this guide is for you. We'll cover everything you need to know to ensure you have an unforgettable experience.
Getting to Tulum
One of the recent developments making Tulum even more accessible is the opening of the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, located just south of the city. This new airport significantly shortens the travel time for visitors, making it easier than ever to reach this beautiful destination.
Why Tulum?
Tulum is known for its incredible archaeological site, which includes well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is just one of the many attractions that make Tulum unique. The city is also home to stunning hotels, world-class beaches, delicious cuisine, and amazing cenotes (natural sinkholes that are perfect for swimming and diving). Additionally, Tulum boasts exciting eco-parks and a laid-back, bohemian vibe that appeals to many travelers.
Understanding Tulum’s Accommodation Options
When it comes to accommodations, Tulum offers a variety of options, but it's important to know what to expect:
All-Inclusive Resorts
Currently, there are only two traditional all-inclusive resorts in Tulum:
1. Kore Tulum – Located on the ocean but lacks a beach.
2. Secrets Tulum – Not on the ocean or beach but has a beach club located 15 minutes away by car. I love this option for all-inclusive lovers as it has a bit of everything including Tulum-vibe experiences onsite.
Most other all-inclusive resorts with "Tulum" in their name are not actually in Tulum. They may be in the Tulum municipality or nearby, but they do not offer the true Tulum experience. For example, Dreams Tulum is around 10-15 minutes away from Tulum on the highway, and others like Catalonia Royal Tulum and Bahia Principe Tulum are even further away.
Boutique Hotels
The true Tulum experience is best enjoyed by staying in one of the many small, unique boutique hotels located right on the sand along the beach road. These hotels offer an intimate and authentic experience, allowing you to easily walk or bike to various beach clubs, restaurants, and shops. There are also many small hotels and condo-style accommodations in Aldea Zama and downtown Tulum, though few offer meal plans.
The Beach
Tulum is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise blue water, there is no doubt this is a beach lovers paradise! It’s important to note that like many coastal areas, Tulum experiences a period known as 'sargassum season.' Generally, this occurs from April through October, with the peak usually falling between June and September. During these months, the shores may be greatly affected by sargassum seaweed, a natural event that varies in intensity each year.
Is Tulum Right for You?
While Tulum is beautiful and unique, it may not be for everyone. Here are some important considerations:
• Off the Grid: Tulum often runs on generators, and some places have spotty cell and WiFi service.
• Dining: Restaurants on the beach road can be pricey, with many offering dishes at Miami-level prices.
• Facilities: Many boutique hotels do not have pools, and the beach clubs at hotels are open to outside guests.
• Location: The beach road is the most desirable area to stay, but there are also accommodations in the town and jungle areas.
As travel agents, it's crucial to ensure our clients are the right fit for Tulum if they bring this destination to the table during our discovery call. If you understand what Tulum is all about and are excited about the off-the-grid, boutique experience, you'll have an amazing time. If you expect a traditional all-inclusive resort experience, you may be disappointed.
Experience Tulum Like a Local
The essence of Tulum lies in being able to explore different beach clubs, walk or bike to various restaurants and shops, and soak in the unique atmosphere. Staying in a resort far from the town won't provide this authentic experience. Tulum is all about the local culture, stunning natural beauty, and a relaxed, bohemian lifestyle.
