Our island-hopping expedition cruise embarks with a visit to Heimaey, the first island located off the southern coast of Iceland. It stands as the sole inhabited island within the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago.

Heimaey boasts a captivating history, entailing tales of runaway slaves, murder, vengeance, mysticism, and encounters with Barbary pirates. Furthermore, it still carries the indelible marks of a formidable volcanic eruption in 1973, which nearly obliterated the island.

Explore the Sea Life Trust beluga whale sanctuary and embark on a hike to observe puffins at Stórhöfði, where approximately eight million of these birds nest each summer. Don't forget to pay a visit to the volcano, Eldfell (translated as 'Fire Mountain'). Ascending to its summit is a rewarding endeavor, offering breathtaking vistas of the town below.

As we set sail for the Faroe Islands, indulge in a serene day at sea, brimming with activities to choose from. Tiny yet Thriving, Runavik is a vibrant settlement nestled on the Faroe Island of Eysturoy. Embracing the eastern shores of Skálafjørður fjord, it has served as a safe harbor for ships for countless centuries, even attracting Viking seafarers in the past.

Join the Expedition Team for an exhilarating kayaking adventure on Skálafjørður, which, stretching over nine miles, holds the distinction of being the Faroe Islands' longest fjord. Alternatively, embark on one of the numerous hiking trails available. You might opt for the relatively gentle route that winds through the heather-laden moorlands surrounding Lake Toftavatn, renowned for its diverse birdlife. For panoramic vistas of the lush peaks that envelop the area, ascend the nearby hill.

Seize this opportunity to stretch your legs before we continue our cruise to Streymoy, the largest of the Faroe Islands.

Established by Norsemen during the 10th century, Tórshavn, often referred to as 'Thor's Harbour,' stands as one of the oldest capitals in Northern Europe.

Meander through its enchanting winding cobbled lanes, passing by vibrant houses adorned with turf roofs. Delve into the city's rich history and the diverse flora, fauna, and geology of the Faroe Islands through local museums.

A little more than a mile north of town, you'll discover Svartafoss waterfall cascading over lush moss-covered rocks. Along the seafront, keep an eye out for the Eider Drake and the distinctive Faroese Starling with its wings tipped in beige.

The northern Shetland Islands mark the geographic extremity of the British Isles. In these remote regions, our explorations will be guided by the prevailing conditions and the most promising opportunities that present themselves.

One potential destination is the delightful Haroldswick on Unst, a place steeped in history where it's believed the Vikings first set foot in the British Isles. Here, you'll encounter a reconstruction of a Viking longhouse and ship, as well as a burial mound believed to be the final resting place of King Harald Fairhair, after whom the village is named.

Another possibility involves embarking on our small expedition boats to uncover hidden coves nestled beneath towering cliffs. At the UK's northernmost point, the cliffs of Hermaness National Nature Reserve provide refuge to countless breeding seabirds, including fulmars, puffins, shags, and gannets, making it a must-visit spot for avid birdwatchers armed with binoculars.

Our ship will dock alongside Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands, providing an opportunity to explore this welcoming Victorian-influenced fishing town.

Stroll along the narrow lanes on foot, uncovering quaint shops offering local whiskies, woolen sweaters, and delectable fudge. Along the historic waterfront, you'll encounter the Shetland Museum, which delves into the region's rich history. Nearby, explore the impressive Fort Charlotte and the regal Town Hall.

Venturing beyond the town, the island boasts remarkable Iron Age villages and the Croft House Museum, offering insights into the challenging life of local crofters. Keep your binoculars at the ready, as you may chance upon grey and common seals along Lerwick's beaches, as well as local birdlife including Red-throated Divers, redshanks, and curlews.

Your final destination in the Shetland Islands is the remote Fair Isle, renowned for its birdlife and distinctive knitwear.

A haven for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, the island boasts an impressive 27 bird species. Its red sandstone cliffs, verdant fields, and moors make it an essential stop for migratory seabirds.

We'll make an effort to facilitate a landing, allowing you to partake in a clifftop hike leading to a strikingly positioned lighthouse, accompanied by the Expedition Team. Immerse yourself in the island's history and the daily life of its 65-strong community at the local museum. You also have the opportunity to support the Fair Islanders by purchasing authentic Fair Isle knitwear directly from local artisans.

In the event that landing isn't feasible, rest assured that the scenic cruising experience will be equally breathtaking.

Kirkwall, the largest town in the Orkney Islands, is a lively hub shaped by a rich tapestry of history, from the Viking era to World War II.

In the heart of the Norse-influenced town center, you can explore the majestic St Magnus Cathedral and the adjacent Earl's Palace, where the stone remnants of this once-grand Renaissance structure stand. For enthusiasts of fine whisky, Kirkwall is home to the Highland Park and Scapa distilleries, known for producing exceptional single malts.

Journey into the past with a visit to the Scara Brae settlement and the enigmatic standing stones of the Ring of Brodgar and Stones of Stenness, all integral components of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage site.

The Orkney Islands also offer a haven for seabird enthusiasts, featuring species like Puffins, Gannets, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, and Eagles. Keep a keen eye out for Dolphins, Whales, and Orcas that may grace the waters as well.
